The United States began it's expansion westward with the Louisiana Purchase.
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,000 square miles of France's claim to the territory of Louisiana in 1803. The U.S. paid 15 million dollars for the Louisiana territory. At the time, France was in war with Great Britain and was desperate for money. They sold the territory for less than 3 cents per acre to the U.S., gaining the money they needed and securing a power that would one day overthrow Great Britain. Napolean was forced to sell these territorys to the United States to support his wars in Europe agaisnt Britian and Allies.
Ceded by Britain
In 1818 Britain ceded territory south of the border establishing North Dakota and Minnesota. In return America gave up some claimed territory in Canada to the British.

1819 in which it was purchased from Spain for 10million Dollars
Texas Annexation
In 1845, Texas fought for independence from Mexico. US troops Jim Bowie and Davie Crockett were killed while driving forces from the Alamo, an abandoned mission and fort. The famous line, "Remember the Alamo!", is born along with the Republic of Texas. The US incorporated them into the country to become the 28th state.
Oregon Territory
1846 was agreed that the 46 parrel would be the border of U.S and Britsh Canada
Ceded by Mexico
In 1846 US went to war with Mexico. The war lasted 2 years. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war and allowed the US to expand its territory by 1/3 for 15 million dollars. See "War with Mexico."
Gadsden Purchase
Purchase in 1853 that established the current borders of the continental United States with parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
